You are my Sunshine

I am a terrible singer.  But it is good to sing to babies, so I've been trying.  Rob seems to like it, but he doesn't know any better yet.  I have found though that because I never sing I can't remember all the lyrics to all the kids songs.  I've got partial refrains and the like.  So I need to look up the lyrics to a bunch.  One of my favorite songs that i wanted to sing to my wee guy is the you are my Sunshine song.  I only knew the refrain, the song is actually much longer and I'll have to learn it.  Before the surgery I kept trying to sing this song to my wee guy, but kept starting to cry when I got to the you never know how much I love you part.  But now I can sing it and not start crying.  Just get a little misty.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are grey,
You'll never know dear how much I love you,
So please don't take my sunshine sunshine away

Full Lyrics

You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away
The other nite, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
I'll always love you
And make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all some day;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
You told me once, dear
You really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me
And love another
You have shattered all my dreams;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Louisiana my Louisiana
the place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
-- green fields clover,
the best fishing
and long tall corn;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
the biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
the finest oysters
and sweet strawberries
from Toledo Bend to New Orleans;
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

  1. Wow. That is a lot longer than what I usually sing, which is the first two verses. I still get choked up singing it, but it's one of my favourites and I've been subjecting them to it since they were in the NICU - whispered, of course, because no one else should be forced to hear me sing! These days I have a hard enough time remembering who I fed two minutes ago to be able to imprint the whole lyrics in my remaining shred of memory :P

  2. I don't think I'm ever going to learn the fully lyrics myself. And I think no matter how terrible we think we are, our babies like our singing.
